Capable of traversing space, time, and other dimensions, the Elder of the Universe obsessed with games of chance known as the Grandmaster staged a contest of champions with the time traveling Scarlet Centurion. The Grandmaster recruited the Squadron Supreme as pawns for his games, while the Scarlet Centurion assembled several of the Squadron's enemies into the Institute of Evil. Besting the Scarlet Centurionís champions the Grandmaster decided to create a team similar to the Squadron Supreme.

Returning to his native universe the Grandmaster transformed three Earthmen into counterparts of the Squadron Supreme. One member the Elder of the Universe recruited was pharmaceutical chemist James Sanders; who the Grandmaster provided with the knowledge to create a chemical which would grant him superhuman speed as the Whizzer.

Sanders later reformulated his speed-granting chemical making him even more powerful, re-dubbing himself the Speed Demon.
