| Origin | |
| As a
child Jonathan Crane reveled in frightening small animals. This
obsession with fear followed him into adulthood, and he became a professor
of psychology at Gotham University, reputed as an authority on the
psychology of fear. A tall spindly man that invested more in books than his personal appearance, Crane was disliked and derided by his pears, who called him "Scarecrow." Overhearing his colleagues mocking him he decided that if he could use his knowledge of fear for profit, then he would be able to dress better and gain their respect and friendship. Hiring out his skills to the highest bidder, Crain profited, but was fired from his professorship for erratic and unethical behavior. Eventually he was captured by Batman and Robin, although he has managed to always return and strike fear as the Scarecrow. |
