Origin
The Olympic god Hades, along with his two brothers Zeus and Poseidon, and three sisters Demeter, Hera and Hestia overthrew their father the Titan, Kronos.

Fearing his eventual fall from power at the hands of his progeny, Kronos devoured his children.  After his birth, Zeus was hidden away from Kronos - who had been deceived into swallowing a swaddled stone instead of the child.  When Zeus grew to maturity he forced his father to disgorge his siblings, who had grown to maturity inside Kronos.  What followed was a war of the gods which resulted in the Titans being defeated and the ascension of the Olympic Gods.

The three brothers divided the spoils amongst themselves.  Zeus inherited the skies, Poseidon the seas and Hades the underworld which bears his name.
