The younger sister of X-Men member Piotr Rasputin (Colossus), Illyana lived on a Siberian farm collective with her parents, until she was abducted the assassin Arcade's agent Miss Locke in a ploy to force the X-Men to rescue him from a robotic duplicate of Dr. Doom.
Illyana lived with her brother and the X-Men until she was adducted to the dimension of Limbo by the sorcerer Belasco. The X-Men attempted a rescue, but Belasco held Illyana captive, turning a portion of her soul demonic in a ploy invade the Earth and conquer the universe.
Illyana after about seven years gained great mystical power, defeated Belasco and escaped Limbo just moments after the X-Men had returned from their attempt to rescue her. Due to the temporal properties of Limbo the then seven year old Illyana was now aged to a teen. She later joined the team of mutant students known as the New Mutants as Magik.
