A brilliant but arrogant surgeon, Dr. Stephen Strange's career was cut short when an accident resulted in extensive nerve damage to his hands. Desperate and hoping for a miracle cure, Strange traveled the world eventually meeting the Tibetan sorcerer known as the Ancient One.
While a guest in the hidden city, Strange learned the ancient sorcerer's pupil Baron Mordo was plotting to betray his mentor to the Dread Dormammu. Discovering Strange had learned of his treachery, and was attempting to warn the Ancient One, Mordo used his mystical powers to verbally restrain the surgeon. Witnessing Mordo's power and murderous intent, Strange discovered evil's true nature and the need to combat its forces.
The Ancient One freed Strange from Mordo's containment spell, revealing that he had known his student's treacherous plans all along and desired to keep his enemy close. Peering into Strange's soul, the sorcerer saw a potential for goodness and adopted him as his disciple.
His studies complete, the former surgeon returned to his Greenwich Village home. Though the world at large believes he is no more than an eccentric authority of the occult, in truth he had inherited from his mentor the mantle of Earth's Sorcerer Supreme, Dr. Strange.
