Psychiatrist Dr. Leonard Samson pursues the Hulk not out of anger or enmity, but to cure Dr. Bruce Banner the man trapped within the monster.
Dr. Samson became entwined in the life of the Hulk when the monster's alter-ego's love Betty Ross was transformed into a crystalline form through a blood transfusion with the Sandman, who needed a cure for his arm being changed into the same crystal form.
Dr. Samson's technique of draining gamma radiation and psionic energy from Dr. Banner while he transformed into the Hulk promised not only to cure Betty Ross, but cure Dr. Banner of the Hulk as well. Once the procedure was complete Ross was returned to normal and Dr. Banner was cured for a time.
For an unknown reason, Dr. Samson risked exposing himself to the radiation that was siphoned from the Hulk. His gamble resulted in him being transformed from a slight man of brown hair into a massively-muscled, green-haired superhuman.
