During the 6th Century in the kingdom of Camelot, Sir Percy of Scandia was charged by King Arthur with the task of a mysterious avenging champion - the Black Knight.  Equipped with the mystical Ebony Sword, forged by the sorcerer Merlin from a meteorite, Sir Percy battled against the forces which threatened the fabled realm.

Although there were other Black Knights throughout the ages none of them wielded the Ebony Sword; due to it being buried beneath Sir Percy's castle with its owner.

Centuries later Sir Percy's castle was inherited by the scientist Nathan Garrett, who was inspired by its contents to become a villainous Black Knight.  Although Garrett's corrupt spirit prohibited him from wielding the mystical Ebony Sword, he used his scientific genius to create a winged horse and design modern weapons with a medieval motif.

When Garrett's villainous career was cut short by fatal injuries sustained battling the Avenger, Iron Man, he called upon his only living relative Dane Whitman.  Near death, Garrett confessed his regrets, and pleaded with his nephew to use his technology to restore the historic nobility of the Black Knight.
