| Origin | |
| The origin of Guy Gardner
predates his birth by billions of years on the planet Vuldar, where lived a
heroic race of warriors. After Vuldar was destroyed by the evil Tormocks, the remaining Vuldarians spread throughout the universe, trading their advanced science in exchange for the genetic material of each civilization's greatest warriors to add to their own bloodline, hoping to endow themselves with abilities to defeat the Tormocks. Centuries ago the Vuldarians came to Earth were they would successfully assimilate within the human population creating human/Vuldarian hybrids. Unknown to Guy Gardner he was born of the lineage of the pairing of humans and Vuldarians, and would not discover this until years after fulfilling another destiny. Growing up with an alcoholic and abusive father, Gardner would constantly lose out to his brother Mace, who despite being less than innocent, could do no wrong in his father's eyes. Embittered Gardner decided that he would get attention by becoming a delinquent. Mace eventually became a police officer and have an opportunity to help his brother Guy steer back onto the right track. After graduating college with prospects of a professional football career, Guy Gardner returned home to discover that his brother Mace had been gunned down by drug dealers that Mace was extorting for money. Mace soon after apparently committed suicide by drowning and Gardner's father drank himself to death with grief. Gardner went on to play professional football until he was injured, ending his career. Looking for an outlet to direct his rage, Gardner became a prison social worker. Meanwhile the Green Lantern, Abin Sur, was piloting his crippled spacecraft to Earth. With the alien police officer near death, Abin Sur's Green Lantern Ring found several successors, but due to proximity to the crash site the ring chose Hal Jordan over Guy Gardner. It would not be until the Crisis on Infinite Earths that Gardner would be called before the Guardians of the Universe to serve as a Green Lantern. |
