Origin
Since the Middle Ages the religious monks known as the Order of Saint Dumas has trained a champion named for the archangel of death, Azrael.

Using genetic manipulation the monks augmented an unborn child with animal hormones and trained him from birth through a process of hypnosis known as "The System" to be the ultimate warrior; Jean Paul Valley became the avenging angel of the Order of Saint Dumas, Azrael.

After Valley's apparent death, he was briefly replaced by another agent of the Order of Saint Dumas, but this agent lost his mind and killed an undercover police officer.

Wishing to reclaim the mantle of Azrael, the Order of Purity recruited police officer Michael Washington Lane to become the latest in a long line of warriors called Azrael.
