| A member of the
Bana-Mighdall, the so-called "Lost Tribe of Amazons," Artemis
was one of hundreds placed on
Themyscira by the witch Circe, who hoped to set the
two nations of Amazons against one another. After battling with the
queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta's forces and a demonic horde, the
Bana-Mighdall were forced to settle on the far side of the island. Years later Hippolyta, held a second contest to select a new Wonder Woman. Haunted by a mystic vision of her daughter Diana's (Wonder Woman I) death, Hippolyta was willing to sacrifice Artemis's life in place of Diana. She secretly had the court sorceress Magala transfer a portion of Diana's gods-given powers to Artemis. The Queen's trickery allowed Artemis to for a time become the new Wonder Woman. |
