| Origin | |
| The
son of a noted scientist of the same name Jor-El followed in his father
footsteps. After graduating the Learning Center he was assigned to
work on
Krypton's fledgling space program headed by General Zod.
Here he fell in love with and married a young astronaut, Lara Lor-Van, who
would later give birth to their son Kal-El. Investigating notes of his father, Jor-El found evidence of unstable elements at Krypton's planetary core, leading him to the conclusion the planet was doomed to catastrophe. He made his finding known to the science council, but the majority did not agree. However, with the help of those who believed his theory he began work on a space ark in the city of Kandor, only to have the program ended when the villain Brainiac shrank and stole the city, and most of Jor-El's supporters. Still determined, Jor-El began a project to build a rocketship in hopes of saving his wife and child. The project remained a secret due to the Science Councils ban on space travel after a colonized moon was destroyed by an experimental nuclear missile created by the scientist Jax-Ur. Jor-El's first experiment utilized a dog as its test subject, but the rocket was sent astray by a meteor. The second rocketship was completed just as the planet began to tremor. Although there was room for both Lara and Kal-El, she refused to leave her husband to die alone. Placing the infant child within the rocketship they sent him to an uncertain destiny on the primitive planet, Earth, where he would become its greatest hero and protector Superman. |
